Ray Bonneville

Ray Bonneville

Acclaimed raconteur Ray Bonneville strips his bluesy Americana down to its essentials and steeps it in the humid grooves of the South, creating a compelling poetry of hard living and deep feeling.

Jim Withers (Montreal Gazette) describes his sound as “folk-roots gumbo… a languid Mississippi Delta groove, seasoned with smooth, weathered vocals and a propulsive harmonica wheeze.” Whether performing solo or fronting a band, playing electric or acoustic guitar, Bonneville allows space between notes that adds potency to every chord, lick, and lyric. Thom Jurek (Allmusic.com) remarks, “With darkness and light fighting for dominance… he’s stripped away every musical excess to let the songs speak for themselves.”

Often called a “song and groove man,” Bonneville has lived the life of the itinerant artist. From his native Quebec, he moved to Boston at age twelve, where he learned English and picked up piano and guitar. Later, he served in Vietnam and earned a pilot’s license in Colorado before living in Alaska, Seattle, and Paris. Six years in New Orleans infused his musical sensibilities with the region's culture and rhythms. And then, a close call while piloting a seaplane proved pivotal: After two decades working as a studio musician, playing rowdy rooms with blues bands, and living hard, Bonneville’s lifetime of hard-won experience coalesced into an urge to write his own music.

Ray recorded his first album, On the Main, in 1992. He’s since released nine albums, including his October  2023 release, On The Blind Side, earned wide critical and popular acclaim, and won an enthusiastic following in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. His awards include a prestigious Juno, the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy, for his 1999 album, Gust of Wind. In 2012, Ray won the solo/duet category in the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge. His post-Katrina ode, “I Am the Big Easy,” earned the International Folk Alliance’s 2009 Song of the Year Award, placed number one on Folk Radio’s list of most-played songs of 2008, and was recently covered by Jennifer Warnes for the BMG label.

Other notable artists who have recorded his songs include Ronnie Hawkins (“Foolish”) and Slaid Cleaves (“Run Jolee Run”). Ray has shared the bill with blues heavyweights Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Dr. John, J.J. Cale, and Robert Cray, and has guested on albums by Mary Gauthier, Gurf Morlix, Eliza Gilkyson, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and other prominent musicians. He has performed at renowned venues around the world, including South by Southwest, Folk Alliance, and Montreal International Jazz Festival, and plays over 100 shows per year across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. When not on the road, Ray divides his time between homes in Goulais River, Ontario and Austin, Texas.

Based in Toronto ON, Alt-Punk/Post-Hardcore four-piece, Napoleon, has been attracting attention from fans and media alike since their formation in early 2018.

Celebrated as one of ‘23 Canadian bands Silverstein's Shane Told knows will keep the scene alive’ in an article by Alternative Press where the famed vocalist filled the publication in on what he feels is the best of the best in Canadian music, the band’s praises are sung far and wide. Alt-Press went on to call the band “heavy in an original fashion,” and say that “Toronto should be proud of these up-and-comers.”

Known and loved for their high-energy, in-your-face performances that will leave a mark on not only your mind but probably your body too (if you’re doing it right), the band has played alongside acts including Crown The Empire, Capstan, Dead By April, Escape The Fate, Single Mothers, Cancer Bats, Fame On Fire, Indian Handcrafts, Bastardane, Michale Graves of the Misfits, and more. They have also left their indelible mark on the stages of NXNE, Canadian Music Week, Gusapalooza, No Passage Fest, and are always announcing more gigs. Their distinguished live show is well-known in the Canadian music scene, once described by Canadian Beats Magazine (who has also interviewed the band) as “loud, sweaty, and completely overwhelming in all of the best ways.”

Best served live, the band naturally has a lot of energy on stage and make a point to get the crowd involved as much as possible. While you can get a pretty good taste of just how wild it’d be to see them thrash in person by listening to the music, vocalist Jon Elmaleh says that “there is a certain amount of energy that is just not translated onto the record.”

Collaborating within the Canadian music industry is something Napoleon is always thrilled to do and pride themselves in doing often. Since early 2020, the band has been managed by Scott Middleton of Cancer Bats, who has also produced every Napoleon release since ‘20. Other stand out collaborations include; the band’s EP “Enemy Within” (2021), which features guest vocals from Shane Told of Silverstein and Corbin Giroux (ex-Rarity), as well as their 2020 single, “Amends,” featuring Luke Bentham of The Dirty Nil.

For Fans Of: Alexisonfire, Counterparts, Silverstein [Post-Hardcore/Metalcore]

The CelloFellos

The CelloFellos

From Argentinian Tango Nuevo nightclubs through New York jazz cellars, to rustic Romania and to the sandy deserts of the future where spaceships land—in search of the best grooves and most beautiful sounds, which they transform as if by magic into music for just two cellos, no path is too far and no style is too foreign for the CelloFellos.

The two cellists Leonard Disselhorst and Bryan Cheng are old friends and united by their desire to transcend the boundaries of traditional classical literature. After decades of concert experience and international tours as two of the most in-demand solo and chamber musicians of their generation, they decided in 2020 to subsequently also work together as a recognized duo. As the Berlin-based CelloFellos, they immerse themselves in the worlds of jazz, tango, folk and other international dance influences. All pieces are arrangements or compositions by their own hand, and their “Global Grooves” programme spans across centuries and continents, from ancient Chinese melodies to traditional Balkan folk tunes, all the way to newly-penned contemporary pop.

Their intoxicatingly exhilarating and moving performances have led to debut and return invitations from many of the most renowned presenters, festivals, and orchestras in Europe, such as the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Heidelberg Spring, Beethovenfest Bonn, Kronberg, and Verbier Festivals. A debut tour in Canada is planned for autumn 2025, in addition to their first album recording, to be released in 2026.

Tia McGraff with Tommy Parham - A Benefit Concert for "Connect The Dots"

Join Black Fly Jam for a fun night to benefit a good cause!

"Connect The Dots" is a registered charity that operates entirely on volunteer help. They persevere with the simple yet vital objective to rescue good surplus food, and distribute it to the agencies that care for the people in need within the Algoma community.

As this need has grown, so has the abilities of Connect The Dots. Since 2017 they have delivered over 100,000 pounds of rescued food to various agencies, and expect to surpass this amount in this current year alone.

Connect The Dots ensures agencies such as Harvest Algoma, The Salvation Army, The Soup Kitchen, Vincent's Place and S.O.Y.A. and others are able to provide for those in need.

Black Fly Jam is proud to present this event to raise awareness and funds for Connect The Dots, and support their goal of the purchase of a delivery van to continue their mission of food rescue and delivery.

Darsombra, Mean Bikini, & The Floor Between Us

Come out for a FREE SHOW + INDEPENDENT SELLERS MARKET!!

Darsombra is a trans-apocalyptic galaxy rock duo from Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Known internationally for walking the line between glam-prog-psych-stoner metal and site-specific installation performance art, their hallucinogenic live shows are often met with the following responses: “I didn’t know what to expect, but that was awesome”, “I’ve never seen anything like that before”, and “it was like tripping on acid, without the acid.”

The band has a committed DIY cottage industry ethic, self-producing their music and videos and booking their own tours globally. They bring a stadium show in a cargo van or a handful of suitcases, and have performed in 48 states and 25 countries worldwide since their inception in 2005.

Mean Bikini, from Victoria, BC, are hailed for their fast, and enthusiastic live show. With musical influences that range from skate punk to hardcore they make a point to celebrate the good in the world while tearing down the bad in a way that is pointed and unapologetic, but also inclusive and just plain fun.

The Floor Between Us is a weird and wonderful local musical comedy group that like to take their audiences on adventures involving multiple genres, time travel, and the utmost absurdity.

The Independent Sellers Market coordinated by Muel Goods gives local vendors a low barrier opportunity to sell their wares. Just show up, set up, and sell things. A 'Pay What You Can' vendor fee is requested to help support the event.
Sell whatever you like, with the exception of dangerous or hateful items, and please no MLMs!

This event is generously supported by The City of Sault Ste Marie

Don Ross has just released new solo album, WATER. It is his 18th solo album, and his 21st including collaborations. For this new recording, Don decided to launch a Kickstarter fundraising campaign and do the release 100% independently. The album features collaborations with legendary guitarist/songwriter Bruce Cockburn, fretless bass wizard Michael Manring, Washington State-based guitarist/composer Sean Hall, singer/guitarist Brooke Miller, Prince Edward Island-based quintet The Atlantic String Machine, and even one piece with the 70-piece City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

Don Ross was born and raised in Montreal and has lived in various parts of Canada over the course of his life. The son of a Mi’kmaw Indigenous mother and a Scottish immigrant father, he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Music) degree from Toronto’s York University and started working full-time as a musician in 1988. That year he won the US National Fingerpick Guitar Championship for the first time.

Don has released solo CDs with a multitude of labels, including Duke Street Records, Sony Music/Columbia Records, Narada Records and CandyRat Records.

In addition, Don has released three other albums independently, Live in Your Head (2006), Any Colour (2009) and Don Ross Louder Than Usual (2019). Over the course of that time, Don’s touring base has gone on to include trips to Australia, India, Russia, China, Japan, South Korea, and a dozen European countries.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Don went back to university, completing a Master of Arts degree in Orchestration through the University of Chichester (UK) and graduating in early 2021. He immediately started working extensively in the world of scoring orchestral and electronic music for video games, films and television.

In addition to his solo performances and recordings, Don also heads his quartet Don Ross Louder Than Usual, which focusses on his more jazz-leaning repertoire.

In 2021, Don won the prestigious Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts, administered by the Canada Council for the Arts.

Don currently lives in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Julie Malia (AKA Jule Malischke) is a highly talented guitarist, singer and songwriter who has made a name for herself in recent years with great compositions and impressive festival appearances. Originally from Swabia in southern Germany, she also works as a lecturer at the Carl Maria von Weber Music University in Dresden, Germany.

Julie is one of the most sought-after soloists on the European acoustic scene. Her repertoire covers an impressively broad musical spectrum – from self-penned heartfelt songs, very original song-cover arrangements, and diverse virtuoso styles on the classical guitar through to modern fingerstyle arrangements. There are few musicians who can boast such mastery of all these related but very different genres.

Julie is known for her vibrant personality, great sense of humour, her wonderful voice and the virtuosity of her guitar playing. She has captivated audiences across Europe in her appearances at many of the most important festivals.

Julie recently released her new CD, Seagull, featuring her original songs and her stunning guitar playing. The recording was nominated for the prestigious German Record Critics' Prize (Preis der deutchen Schallplattenkritik) in July 2024.

Julie lives in Dresden, Germany.

Jack Pine & Tom Peer at Broers Jansen

Jack Pine (Ottawa Singer/Songwriter/Producer Gareth Auden-Hole) grew up with his head in the city and his heart in the northern wild. Enthralled with music, from a very young age he fed his ears a steady diet of Toms [Waits, Yorke, Petty] and just about anything else he could get his hands on. It was not until adulthood that he began writing music of his own, and years later still before he took the name of a tree. By then he'd finished a degree, hitchhiked across his Canadian homeland, played in a handful of bands, and studied music production in Victoria, Ottawa, and London. It was 2011 before work finally began on what would become a self-titled debut album as Jack Pine and The Fire.

COVER: $20 or PWYC

We are pleased to present Ripcordz , HAILS SSM , and SYLO at 72 East Street for another evening of heavy music!

Tickets are available at the Rad Zone, or from members of HA!LS or SYLO. If you don't get one, there will still be more room, so just show up closer to the door time (6:30). The suggested donation at the door is also $20 but as always, it is a pay what you can show, and everybody is welcome.
